Since Women around the Messenger, the English translation by Abdur-Raafi’ Adewale Imam of a modern work in Arabic by Muhammad ‘Ali Qutb, was first published in 2007, we have received many letters and email messages from readers who say they have enjoyed the book, and have learned much that was new and inspiring to them about the earliest Muslim women. They have also been candid enough to tell us that there were some copyediting errors in the first edition, and a couple of readers offered to correct those for us. They also pointed out that some passages or references in this translation were unclear or confusing. This is a common issue when translating from Arabic to another language: there are concepts that Arabic speakers take for granted, but for which a non-Arab would need a more detailed explanation.
As a result of the feedback from these readers, we have taken paints to annotate, rephrase and disambiguate all such passages in the text. We thank them all with the Islamic phrase, jazakum Allah khayr (may Allah reward you). We are espcially grateful to ‘Umm Abdullah’, who actually mailed us her copy of the book with the suggested corrections marked in red ink! May Allah reward these sisters for their sincerity and their willingness to contribute their time and efforts in this regard.
It is our hope that this revised and annotated second edition of Women around the Messenger will be of even greater benefit than the first-to many Muslim women and men.
