Full Description: In Ramadhaan 1346 A. H. a monthly booklet entitled ” Al-Mazaahir” was launched by Madrasah Mazaahir-e-Uloom under the editorship of Maulana Jaleel Saheb, who at that time was a teacher at the above-mentioned institude and is presently the Mufti of Jamiah Ashraffiyah Lahore. At the insistence of Maulana Jaleel Saheb, I started writing articles for this monthly digest on the topic of “Ikhtilaaf-e-Aimmah” (The Differences of the Imams) inspite of my inefficiency and incapability. Despite the barrage of engements, I continued writing a few pages each month for this magazine. However, due to certain circumstances, the said magazine terminated publication after about fourteen months. Consequently, the articles of this worthless being also came to an end. Many friends and editors of other magazines vehemently insisted I complete these series but to no avail. I was able to write for the first magazine simply because the editor Maulana Jaleel Saheb was a teacher at the madrasah and he was always around to ask me to write. However, at the termination of this magazine, inspite of my own desire and the insistence of my colleagues, the book could not reach completion. My initial intention was to compile a detailed and comprehensive book on this subject but my various Ilmi (academic) as well as Taleefi (literary) engagements precluded the realisation of this intention. At that time, some friends insisted I publish whatever has been completed as part one of this book but because the subject matter was dificient, I thought I will publish it once a bit more is added to it. Hoverer, now there remains no hope whatsover of fulfilling this ambition. Excessive ailments have rendered me totally helpless and here I am sitting on the edge of the graves.
Maulana Muhammad Shahid and other sincere friends insisted that whatever has been compiled is not devoid of benefit. So, (following my permission), Maulana Muhammed Shahid decided to print whatever has been compiled.
May Allah Ta’ala grant barakah in this, may He benefit the people from it and may He bless Maulana Shahid with success in this world as well as the next. Aameen.

If the Imams of the four schools [madhahib] established all of their rulings from the Qur’an and the Sunna, why have they differed on so many points? How can two authentic narrations from the Messenger of Allah appear to contradict one another? When is it acceptable for Muslims to differ over religious matters? What did the Messenger mean when he said, “The differences of my Umma are a source of mercy?” Using examples from the Messenger of Allah , his Companions, and their Followers, The Differences of the Imams answers these puzzling questions in a thorough and concise manner. In a clear and lucid style, the author illustrates the various ways in which different narrations seem to contradict one another and how the Companions and the Imams of jurisprudence have reconciled these apparent differences. This work is an excellent resource for anyone seeking to better understand some of the deeper issues of hadith and jurisprudence: how these two disciplines come together to form the basis of Islamic law [Shari’a], why it is necessary to follow a school of Islamic law, and what the basic principles of hadith scholarship are.
