Full Description: Mawlana Ali ibn Husain Safi, the author of the Rashahat, lived at the beginning the 16th century. He was the brother-in-law of the famous mystic and poet jami, who gave him the name ‘Safi’.
In the Rashahat ‘Ain al-Hayat, Safi gives an account of the lives and teachings of a group of Sufi mystics known as the Khawajagan- the Masters of Wisdom. The Khwajagan lived in Central Asia between the 10th and the 15th centuries.
The ranks of the Khwajagan include the great Sufis ‘Abd al-Khaliq al-Ghujdawani and Baha’ ad-Din Naqshband, who gave his name to the Naqshbandi order, though he did not found it. The many branches of the Naqshbandia survive to this day.
In his excellent book Masters of wisdom of Central Asia, also translated by Muhtar Holland, Hasan Shushud writes of the Rashahat. “In the literature of Sufism we rarely come across a work free of fables, superstitions, and exaggerations. Mawlana Ali ibn Husain Safi performed an invaluable service for he steered well clear of those peculiarities that give Islamic Sufism a ‘mythical’ flavour. He presented future generations with clear and precise biographies of the great and genuine Sufis who emerged in Turkestan at a most significant period. May Allah be eternally pleased with him and with his Masters.”
This book is the first translation into English of the Rashahat. It is hoped that this famous work will be of benefit to readers with an interest in Sufism, and to seekers of knowledge and understanding everywhere.
